Bakkavor Group’s Merseyside-based Melrow Salads has helped Marks & Spencer become the first retailer in the world to sell seedless peppers.
Developed through a natural breeding programme that has taken more than fifteen years, M&S, Melrow Salads, and seed house, Syngenta, have managed to develop a new variety of pepper - the Angello™ - that eliminates the need for seeds in peppers.
Not only is this the first seedless snacking baby pepper available, but it has also been developed with a sweeter taste than any other pepper on the high street and is extra crunchy.
The new Angello™ pepper is grown in Southern Spain, Israel and the Netherlands.
Commenting on the launch, Bernard Sparkes who is responsible for produce development at Melrow Salads, said:
“We enjoy working with M&S on special projects like these - it’s really exciting to introduce an amazing new variety of vegetable to the high street. Having a seedless pepper not only saves preparation time, but also this new variety tastes delicious too - better than any other pepper available. We hope M&S customers enjoy eating Angello™ peppers as much as we have enjoyed developing them!”
Luciano Fioramonti, Syngenta Business Manager added:
“We hope that we’ll be able to convert people who don’t normally like peppers with our delicious Angello™ - it’s the ultimate healthy convenience food as it is packed full of vitamin C.”
